If there is one thing that puts serious fear straight into the minds of my older patients (probably sixties plus) it is the thought of getting dementia/Alzheimer’s.

And with good reason, it is an awful way to die.

Sadly, by the time you are getting overt symptoms, it may be too late, certainly if you wait for the NHS to deliver its symptomatic-based care.

With the politicians keen to make headlines, they and the charities, helped by Big Pharma, are selling us the dream of drugs to “defeat” dementia.

Let’s be clear, we cannot afford to treat the symptoms of dementia.

But what they will not tell you is that the food you eat could be slowly contributing to your risk of developing dementia.

Did you know that the term diabetes type 3 has been proposed as a precursor/risk for dementia?

As ever, our old friend, the sustained inflammatory response is yet again ageing us fast.

Once you have inflammation systemically (in the blood), the blood-brain barrier senses it and turns on its immune system, the glia cells and slowly, we burn our brains downs.

But it gets even scarier, it is not just diabetics that are at risk, this starts long before that and at a spectrum.

There is no mystery here, if you eat a huge amount of ultra-processed food with an emphasis on carbohydrates, you are going to slowly put on excess adipose tissue.

Plus, your blood glucose levels will be consistently high and eventually, your cells stop responding to insulin, and hey presto, you get a diagnosis:

The NHS loves to jump in with metformin, but why not start with treating the cause?

Or as this brave MD from USA says:

What we have is an evolutionary mismatch between our hunter-gatherer genes and modern lifestyles.

If you go to a zoo and see this:

You would want to know what they were feeding the giraffe!

Clearly not their normal diet and too much.

It is the same as us humans.

Let us not normalise the abnormal (esp in children).

Back in Jan 2021, we talked about the Cosmo front cover, promoting obesity as healthy.

No judgement on the person. This is nothing to do with aesthetics, this is about health. In this case, your brain’s health.

Can we really endorse this and wait for the neural tissue to be burnt down?
